If you are choosing an e-liquid for a pod kit, knowing whether it is a nic salt or freebase matters, so here is the clear answer. Elux Legend is a nicotine salt, not a freebase e-liquid. It uses nicotine in its smooth salt form, which gives a gentle hit and fast craving relief, made for low power pod kits rather than high power sub ohm devices. This guide explains the difference between the two, why it matters and how to be sure you are buying the right type.

For the chemistry behind it, our guide on what Elux Legend nic salts are and how they work goes deeper. Our guide on what Elux Legend is covers the basics.

The short answer

Elux Legend is a nicotine salt e-liquid. Every bottle in the range uses nicotine in its salt form rather than freebase, which is what gives it the smooth, satisfying draw that suits pod kits so well. This is true across all the strengths, whether you choose 10mg or 20mg. So if you have a refillable pod kit or an MTL starter kit, Elux Legend is exactly the right kind of liquid for it. If you were looking for a high VG freebase liquid for a powerful sub ohm device, this is not that. The distinction is worth understanding.

Nic salt versus freebase, explained

The two are simply different forms of the same nicotine. Freebase nicotine is the original type used in vaping, giving a stronger, sharper throat hit that becomes harsh at higher strengths, so it is usually used at lower levels in high power sub ohm devices that make big clouds. Nic salts, like Elux Legend, have a food safe acid added that lowers the pH, making the nicotine far smoother to inhale even at 20mg and quicker to absorb. That smoothness and speed is why salts pair naturally with small, low power pod kits and suit people coming off cigarettes.

Why it matters which one you use

Matching the liquid to the device is important for both comfort and safety. Elux Legend, as a 50/50 nic salt, is designed for low power mouth to lung vaping, where it gives a tight, smooth, cigarette like draw. Putting a high strength salt into a powerful sub ohm device would deliver far too much nicotine far too quickly and feel unpleasant. Equally, a thick high VG freebase liquid would not wick properly in a small pod coil. Using Elux Legend in the pod kit it is made for is what gives you the clean, satisfying experience the range is known for.

How to tell what you are buying

Identifying a nic salt is easy once you know what to look for. Elux Legend bottles are clearly labelled as nic salts and come in 10ml sizes at 10mg or 20mg, which are the typical salt strengths. A 50/50 VG/PG ratio is another giveaway, since that balance is made for pods rather than clouds. By contrast, freebase liquids for sub ohm use tend to come in larger shortfill bottles with high VG ratios like 70/30 and low nicotine. If a 10ml bottle is sold at 10mg or 20mg with a 50/50 blend, as Elux Legend is, you are looking at a nic salt.

Can you step down over time?

One nice feature of starting on a nic salt is the room to reduce nicotine later. Many people begin on a 20mg salt in a pod, then move down to 10mg as their cravings ease. Some eventually step toward lower strength freebase liquids in an MTL setup once they are happy with a gentler nicotine level. Elux Legend supports the early part of that journey well, with its smooth 10mg and 20mg options. Our guide on choosing the right Elux Legend strength, 10mg vs 20mg helps you pick your starting point.

Why the salt form suits switchers

The reason Elux Legend uses a nic salt rather than freebase comes down to who the range is for. Most people buying it are moving off cigarettes or disposables, the group for whom the smooth, fast acting salt is a much better fit. A cigarette delivers nicotine quickly. The salt form mirrors that speed, so a craving is settled in seconds rather than minutes. Because the hit is gentle as well as quick, you tend to feel satisfied without constant puffing, which often means using less liquid overall. None of that would work with a harsh, slow freebase liquid in a high power device, which is built for a completely different style of vaping focused on big clouds rather than discreet craving relief.

There is also the practical matter of the device itself. Switchers usually want something small, simple and pocketable rather than a large mod with settings to adjust. The low power pod kits that suit Elux Legend are exactly that. The whole package, a smooth salt in a simple pod, is designed to feel as close to the cigarette or disposable experience as possible while costing far less to run. That alignment between the liquid and the device is the real reason Elux chose the salt form for this range. It is what makes it such a natural first step. Our guide to the wider range, starting with what Elux Legend is, puts it in context.

The bottom line

Elux Legend is firmly a nicotine salt, not a freebase e-liquid. It uses the smooth salt form of nicotine for a gentle hit and fast craving relief, comes in 10ml bottles at 10mg or 20mg in a 50/50 blend and belongs firmly in the low power pod kit and MTL category. If that describes your setup, Elux Legend is exactly the type of liquid you want. It is what makes the range such a natural fit for ex smokers and disposable switchers.
