A sub ohm tank is an atomiser built around a coil with a resistance below 1.0 ohm, fed by open airflow and run at higher wattage to produce dense vapour on a direct to lung draw. This collection holds 31 tanks and rebuildables from £4.99. Alongside the mesh sub ohm tanks you will find dual coil RDAs and several restricted lung and mouth to lung tanks, so there is something here whether you are chasing flavour, vapour or a tighter draw.

Everything here uses the standard 510 thread, so it will screw onto any regulated box mod or tube battery with a 510 connection. That is what makes tanks worth buying carefully. A good tank outlasts several devices and moves from mod to mod as your hardware changes.

Sub ohm, restricted lung and mouth to lung

The resistance and the airflow together decide how a tank feels. A true sub ohm tank such as the Freemax Fireluke 2, the Smok TFV16 Lite or the Aspire Athos runs coils in the 0.15 ohm to 0.6 ohm region with wide open airflow. You inhale straight into the lungs, the vapour is warm and heavy and the tank gets through liquid quickly.

Restricted direct lung sits between the two extremes. The Innokin Z-Force is built for both DL and RDL use, so you can close the airflow down for a firmer draw without going all the way to a cigarette style pull. At the tight end, the Innokin Zenith 2, the Innokin Plex and the Aspire AF Tank are mouth to lung designs. They use coils above 1.0 ohm and pair with 50/50 e-liquid at higher nicotine strengths.

                        Mesh coils and round wire

Almost every modern tank ships with mesh. A mesh coil is a flat perforated strip rather than a wound wire, so it presents a much larger surface area to the cotton and heats evenly across the whole face. That means a faster ramp up, a cleaner flavour and a coil less likely to develop a hot spot. Round wire still has a place in rebuildables. For a stock tank, mesh is the better default.

                        Rebuildables: RDA, RTA and RDTA

Rebuildable atomisers let you install your own coil and cotton instead of buying a prebuilt head. An RDA is a rebuildable dripping atomiser. It has a build deck and no tank section, so you drip liquid onto the wick. The Geek Vape Tengu and the Hellvape Rebirth are both dual coil RDAs, meaning the deck takes two coils for a bigger, warmer vape. An RTA adds a reservoir that wicks into the deck. An RDTA sits between the two with the juice well below the deck.

Rebuildables reward patience. Running a coil below 1.0 ohm on a mechanical device without understanding Ohm's law and battery safety is genuinely dangerous. Build on a regulated mod that reads resistance and cuts off if something is wrong.

Capacity and the UK 2ml rule

Tanks sold in the UK containing nicotine e-liquid are limited to 2ml. That is why so many arrive with a 2ml glass in the box and a larger spare glass sold separately for use with nicotine free liquid. It is a packaging rule rather than a limit on the tank design. Remember that a sub ohm tank at 60 watts will empty 2ml far faster than a mouth to lung tank at 12 watts.

                        Airflow, glass and fitment

Airflow. A bottom airflow ring with wide slots gives the loosest draw. Side airflow and honeycomb inserts are quieter and less prone to leaking.

Fill system. Sliding and hinged top caps are quicker than screw tops and far less likely to cross thread.

Glass. Pyrex cracks. Buy a spare glass with the tank if one is offered.

Diameter. A 25mm or 28mm tank will overhang a narrow mod. Measure your device first.

                        E-liquid and coil life

Sub ohm coils need a high VG shortfill, commonly 70/30, at a low nicotine strength of 0mg to 6mg. Thin 50/50 liquid will seep past the seals and flood the airflow. Mouth to lung tanks want the opposite: a 50/50 blend at up to the UK maximum of 20mg per ml, supplied in 10ml bottles.

Expect one to two weeks from a coil. Sweet dessert and candy liquids shorten that noticeably because the sweetener bakes onto the mesh. Prime a new coil through the wicking ports, fill the tank and let it stand for five minutes before the first draw.

                        Buying tanks in the UK

Vaping products are sold to over 18s only and every order is age verified before dispatch. Tanks supplied with nicotine e-liquid are capped at 2ml and nicotine bottles at 10ml and 20mg per ml. UK delivery is free on orders over £20. Sub ohm tank questions answered

What does sub ohm actually mean?

It means the coil has an electrical resistance of less than 1.0 ohm. Lower resistance draws more current at a given voltage, so the coil heats faster and vaporises more liquid. The practical result is a warmer, much larger cloud on a direct to lung inhale. Anything above 1.0 ohm is a mouth to lung coil and behaves in the opposite way.

Will a sub ohm tank fit my mod?

If your device has a 510 threaded connection then almost certainly yes. Every tank in this collection uses 510 fitment. The two things to check are diameter and power. A 25mm or 28mm tank will overhang a slim mod. A sub ohm coil rated at 60 to 80 watts also needs a mod that can actually deliver that much.

What is the difference between an RDA and a sub ohm tank?

A sub ohm tank holds e-liquid and uses a prebuilt coil head that you screw in and replace when it wears out. An RDA has a build deck where you install your own coil and cotton. It has no reservoir, so you drip liquid onto the wick or fill a small well. RDAs give more control to those who want it. Tanks are far more convenient.

Why is my tank only 2ml?

UK regulations limit any tank sold containing nicotine e-liquid to 2ml. Many tanks ship with a 2ml glass and a larger extension glass sold separately for use with nicotine free liquid. The restriction is on what can be sold prefilled, not on the engineering of the tank itself.

What e-liquid should I use in a sub ohm tank?

Use a high VG shortfill, typically 70/30 VG to PG, at 0mg, 3mg or 6mg. Sub ohm coils vaporise a lot of liquid per puff, so anything stronger becomes harsh very quickly. Thin 50/50 liquid is the wrong choice here because it will leak past the seals and pool in the airflow.

How often do sub ohm coils need changing?

One to two weeks is normal at moderate use. Sweet, dark and dessert flavours contain sucralose that caramelises on the mesh and can halve that. You will notice the flavour going flat before the vapour drops off. Always prime a new coil and let it soak for five minutes before firing it.

Can I use a sub ohm tank on a mechanical mod?

Only if you understand Ohm's law, battery chemistry and the current rating of the cell you are using. A mechanical mod has no chipset and no protection, so it will happily push a dangerous current through a badly built coil. A regulated mod reads the resistance and refuses to fire if something is wrong, which is the sensible choice for almost everyone.
