Buying a coil is a compatibility question before it is anything else. The sections below set out which family fits what and how to get a full lifespan out of each head.
The Freemax coil families
904L M mesh
The Freemax 904L M Mesh Replacement Coils are £5.99 and are the workhorse of the range, built around the 904L stainless steel mesh that Freemax is known for. The M series fits the Fireluke and Mesh Pro tank lineage, with resistances running from very low single coil heads for high wattage direct to lung vaping up to higher resistance options for a more restricted draw.
X mesh
The Freemax X Mesh Replacement Coils are £12.99 and cover the newer X series hardware. This is the most expensive family in the collection. Check the variant list on the product page for the exact resistance you need.
Maxpod NS mesh
The Freemax Maxpod NS Mesh Replacement "SaltCoilTech 2.0" Coils are £8.99 and sit at the opposite end of the range. NS stands for nic salt. These are higher resistance mouth to lung heads for the Maxpod pod system, built to run 50/50 nic salt at low wattage rather than for cloud production.
Resistance, wattage and matching your liquid
The number printed on a coil is the deciding factor in everything else. Coils below 1.0 ohm are sub ohm heads. They run at higher wattage on open airflow with a direct to lung draw and they need a thick high VG shortfill at 3mg or 6mg. Coils rated at 1.0 ohm and above are mouth to lung heads, running at low wattage on a tight draw with a 50/50 liquid such as a 10ml nic salt at up to 20mg per ml. Start at the low end of the wattage range stamped on the coil and work up in small steps.
Mesh against round wire
A traditional coil is round wire wrapped into a spiral. A mesh coil is a flat perforated strip. Mesh presents far more surface area to the cotton and heats evenly across it rather than concentrating at the centre, which gives a faster ramp up and more consistent flavour.
Priming a new coil properly
Most coils that fail early were killed on the first puff. Drip e-liquid directly into each wicking port until the cotton looks saturated, then add a couple of drops down the centre. Fit the coil, fill the tank and leave it standing upright for five minutes. Take two or three draws without firing before the first proper puff.
What shortens coil life
Expect a mesh coil to last one to two weeks in normal use. Sweetened dessert, candy and dark fruit liquids cut that short, because the sucralose used to sweeten them caramelises onto the mesh and blackens the wick. Chain vaping, running above the stamped wattage range and letting the tank run low are the other common causes. Fading flavour, reduced vapour and a harsh edge on the inhale are the signs it is time to change.

What does 904L mesh actually mean?
904L is a grade of stainless steel used for the mesh strip inside the coil. Freemax builds its M series around it. Mesh is a flat perforated sheet rather than a spiral of round wire, so it heats evenly across a much larger surface area than a traditional wrapped coil.
Why does my new coil taste burnt straight away?
Almost always because the wick was not saturated before firing. Prime it thoroughly, then let the tank stand for five minutes after filling. Two other causes are running above the wattage range stamped on the coil and vaping with the tank nearly empty. A coil scorched this way cannot be recovered.
