Compatibility is the only question that matters when you buy a vape battery, so start with the cell size your mod actually takes. This collection holds 17 products covering 18650, 20700 and 21700 rechargeable cells, a size adaptor and device specific replacement batteries, priced from £1.99. The brands stocked are Vapcell, Golisi and Innokin.

These are loose lithium ion cells for regulated box mods with removable batteries. They are not for pod kits or all in one devices, which have their battery sealed inside. If your device has a hinged door or a screw off cap at the base, it takes a cell from this collection.

Which cell size does your mod take?

18650

The long standing standard and still the most common. Around 18mm across and 65mm long. Most single and dual battery mods built before the 21700 era use it. Stocked here as the Vapcell K25 at 2500mAh, the Vapcell K30 at 3000mAh, the Vapcell M35A at 3500mAh and the Golisi S26 at 2600mAh.

20700

A slightly wider and taller cell that offers more capacity in the same rough footprint. The Golisi S32 at 3200mAh and the Innokin Ampking at 3000mAh cover this size. Fewer mods take it than the other two formats, so check the manual rather than assuming.

21700

The current high output standard. The Vapcell P42A holds 4200mAh, which is a substantial jump on any 18650 and the reason 21700 mods run longer between charges. Many 21700 mods will also accept an 18650 with an adaptor sleeve, although capacity drops accordingly.

Reading mAh and amps

Two numbers appear on every cell. mAh is capacity, meaning how long the battery lasts between charges. Amps is the continuous discharge rating, meaning how much current it can safely supply at once. Higher wattage builds and lower resistance coils pull more current, so the amp rating is the figure that decides whether a cell is safe for your setup.

The two work against each other. The Vapcell M35A carries 3500mAh at a 10A rating, which suits a mild single coil setup that runs all day. The Golisi S26 holds less at 2600mAh but is rated 35A, which is what a demanding sub ohm build needs. Match the amp rating first, then take whatever capacity comes with it.

Pairing cells in a dual battery mod

Dual battery mods should run married cells. Buy two of the same brand, model and batch, charge them together and always use them as a pair. Mixing a tired cell with a fresh one makes the mod work around the weaker of the two and puts uneven strain on both. Mark each pair with a permanent pen so they stay together.

Charging, wraps and safe carry

Use an external charger designed for lithium ion cells wherever you can, because it terminates the charge properly. Never leave cells charging unattended overnight. The plastic wrap is not decoration either. It is the insulation between the positive terminal and the outer casing, so if it is nicked or lifting at the top, stop using the cell. Loose batteries must never travel in a pocket with keys or coins. Carry them in a plastic battery case.

Adaptors and device specific batteries

The Innokin 18650 to 20700 adaptor is a sleeve that lets a smaller cell sit securely in a larger bay. It adds no capacity of its own. The Innokin Trine and Trine Q EcoDrain replacement batteries are complete battery sections for a specific device rather than loose cells, so they only fit the device they are named for.

Vape battery questions answered

Which battery does my vape mod need?

Check the manual or look inside the battery bay. Most regulated box mods take one or two 18650 cells, while newer high output models take a 21700 and some take a 20700. Pod kits and all in one devices are not included here because their battery is sealed inside and charges over USB. Never force a cell that does not drop in freely.

What is the difference between mAh and the amp rating?

The mAh figure is capacity, which is how long the cell runs before it needs charging. The amp figure is the continuous discharge rating, which is how much current it can safely deliver at any moment. Low resistance coils at high wattage draw more current, so the amp rating decides whether a cell is suitable and the mAh only decides how often you charge it.

Can I mix different batteries in a dual battery mod?

No. Dual battery mods should run a married pair, meaning two cells of the same brand, model and age that are always charged and used together. Mixing cells of different capacities or different states of wear makes the mod work around the weaker one and puts uneven load on both. Mark your pairs so they never get separated.

What should I do if the battery wrap is torn?

Stop using the cell. The wrap is the insulation that keeps the positive terminal isolated from the outer casing, so a nick or a lifted edge creates a genuine short circuit risk. Either have it rewrapped properly with a new sleeve and insulator ring or replace the cell. Do not patch it with tape.

How should I carry spare batteries?

Always in a rigid plastic battery case, never loose in a pocket or a bag. Keys, coins and other metal objects can bridge the terminals and cause a short, which makes a lithium ion cell heat up very quickly. A case costs very little and it is the single most useful accessory to buy alongside your batteries.

Does the Innokin adaptor increase battery life?

No. The 18650 to 20700 adaptor is a sleeve that lets a smaller cell fit securely in a larger battery bay. It supplies no power of its own, so your run time is whatever the 18650 inside it provides. It is useful if you own a 20700 mod and want to use 18650 cells you already have.
