Pod, AIO, sub ohm or box mod
A pod kit pairs a battery with a clip in pod and is the simplest format to live with. An all in one device builds the tank into the body so there is nothing to screw on. A sub ohm kit runs coils below 1.0 ohm with open airflow and higher wattage for dense vapour. A box mod is the powered body alone, chosen by people who already know which 510 tank they want on top. MTL against DTL
Mouth to lung means drawing vapour into your mouth first and then inhaling, through a tight airway at low wattage. It is the closest sensation to a cigarette and uses coils above 1.0 ohm with 50/50 e-liquid at up to 20mg per ml. Direct to lung means pulling vapour straight into the lungs through an open airway, which needs coils below 1.0 ohm, higher wattage and a high VG shortfill at 0mg to 6mg. Freemax hardware leans towards the direct to lung end.
What to check before you buy
Battery capacity. Measured in mAh. A device pushing 50W or more gets through charge quickly, so anything under 2000mAh will need topping up during the day.
Coil availability. Check replacement coils are widely stocked before committing. A discontinued coil family strands an otherwise good device.
Airflow. An adjustable ring lets you tighten the draw towards mouth to lung or open it fully, which effectively gives you two devices in one.
Running costs and the UK rules
Mesh coils vaporise e-liquid quickly, which is why they taste so good and also why a bottle disappears faster than on an older round wire setup. Budget for a coil every one to two weeks. Sweetened dessert and candy flavours contain sucralose that caramelises onto the mesh and can halve that. The kit is a one off cost while coils and e-liquid are the recurring one.

What does the wattage in the kit name mean?
It is the maximum power the device can deliver to a coil. Around 50W is plenty for restricted direct to lung vaping and is easier on battery life. Around 100W gives headroom for lower resistance mesh coils and a fully open draw. A higher maximum does not mean you have to use it, because the chipset lets you dial the output down.
Is a Freemax kit suitable for a beginner?
It depends what you want from it. Freemax hardware leans towards direct to lung vaping with mesh coils and high VG shortfills, which produces a lot of vapour and is not the closest match to smoking. Someone who has only just put cigarettes down usually gets on better with a tighter mouth to lung pod kit first, then moves up later.
Which e-liquid should I use in a Freemax kit?
The coil resistance decides. Coils below 1.0 ohm are sub ohm coils and need a high VG shortfill, commonly 70/30, at a low nicotine strength of 0mg to 6mg. Coils above 1.0 ohm are mouth to lung coils and want a 50/50 blend such as a 10ml nic salt at up to 20mg per ml. Thin liquid in a sub ohm coil is the usual cause of leaking.
How often will I need to change the coil?
One to two weeks is normal for a mesh coil in daily use. Heavily sweetened dessert and candy e-liquids contain sucralose that bakes onto the mesh and can halve that life, while fruits and menthols are much gentler. Prime every new coil by saturating the cotton through the wicking ports and leaving the pod to stand for five minutes.
