Rebuildable RDA
A rebuildable dripping atomiser, almost always shortened to RDA, is an atomiser with no tank section at all. You build the coil yourself, thread cotton through it then drip e-liquid straight onto the wick or feed it from a squonk bottle below. RDAs sit at the far end of the hobby. Nothing arrives pre made, so wire type, resistance, wrap count, wick density and airflow are all set by you. In return you get the most direct flavour any atomiser format can give. Everything listed here is a 510 fitment component sold to adults aged 18 and over.
RDA, RTA and RDTA: the real difference
All three are rebuildable, which means you fit your own coil and cotton rather than buying a sealed replacement head. The difference is how liquid reaches the wick.
RDA. A dripper. The deck sits under a barrel with no reservoir and you drip every few draws or squonk it from below. Shortest possible path from wick to airflow, which is why the flavour is so pronounced.
RTA. The deck sits inside a chamber with a glass reservoir around it and the cotton tails feed down into juice channels. You gain a tank you can carry at the cost of a slightly muted top end.
RDTA. The deck sits above a tank section with the tails dropping into the liquid below. It behaves much like a dripper while still holding a reserve.
Deck types explained
Postless decks
A postless deck has no upright posts. Coil legs drop into holes in the deck floor and clamp with grub screws from the side, so trimming the legs to length before fitting is essential. Postless decks give the cleanest airflow path and the deepest juice well, which is why most 25mm and larger RDAs use them.
Clamp decks
Clamp decks hold the legs under a flat plate rather than a single screw point. They are the easiest style to build on because the clamp grips a wide flat area, so thick fused claptons seat securely without deforming.
Single coil versus dual coil
A single coil build is more efficient. It uses less power for the same heat and drains the battery slower. A dual coil build doubles the heated surface area, halves the effective resistance and produces far more vapour. It also demands a mod that can supply the current safely.
Diameter, airflow and flavour
A 22mm RDA sits flush on tube mods and small boxes, keeps the chamber tight and suits a single coil at modest wattage. 24mm and 25mm is the mainstream size where most dual coil decks live. The 28mm and 30mm options from Vaperz Cloud and Overpowered are built for big parallel or clapton builds with wide bores to match, so they will overhang a slim mod.
Flavour comes down to where the air meets the coil and how tight the chamber is around it. Side airflow aimed at the coil face gives a warm concentrated draw. Bottom airflow rising underneath cools the vapour and opens the draw out. A low profile top cap keeps the chamber ceiling close to the coil so vapour does not thin out before it reaches you, which is why a well designed 22mm dripper can out flavour a much larger tank.
Building and wicking
Set the coil central to the airflow with a small gap beneath it, tighten the screws firmly and check the resistance on your mod before you wick. Pulse at low wattage and strum the coil with ceramic tweezers until it glows evenly from the centre outwards. Hot legs or a patchy glow mean the coil is touching the deck or the wraps are not seated together.
Take a strip of cotton that passes through the coil with light resistance rather than a tug, trim the tails so they just reach the deck floor and fluff the ends. Cotton packed too tightly will not draw liquid and gives a dry hit. Cotton left too loose lets liquid run past the wick and out of the airflow holes.
E-liquid and the UK rules
An RDA is a direct to lung atomiser, so the sensible pairing is a high VG shortfill, commonly 70/30 or thicker, at a low nicotine strength. E-liquid containing nicotine is capped at 20mg per ml in the UK and nicotine bottles are limited to 10ml, while tanks sold pre filled with nicotine liquid are limited to 2ml. Shortfills work around the bottle rule by being sold nicotine free with headroom left for you to add a nicotine shot yourself. At the power a dual coil build runs, most people use 0mg or 3mg because anything stronger turns harsh.

What is an RDA?
RDA stands for rebuildable dripping atomiser. It has a build deck and a barrel but no tank section, so you fit your own coil and cotton then drip e-liquid straight onto the wick. Because the air reaches the coil with nothing in between, an RDA gives the most direct flavour of any atomiser format.
Is an RDA suitable for a beginner?
Not as a first device. An RDA has no chipset of its own and relies entirely on the mod beneath it, so you need to understand coil resistance, battery limits and Ohm's law before using one. If you already vape on a sub ohm tank, an RDA is the easiest rebuildable to learn on because there is no tank section to flood.
How often do I need to drip?
Roughly every three to six draws, depending on your power setting and how absorbent the cotton is. A deeper juice well buys you a few extra puffs. If you would rather not drip at all, a squonk mod feeds liquid up through a hollow 510 pin from a bottle inside the mod.
What resistance should I build to?
Most dual coil RDA builds land between 0.1 and 0.3 ohms and most single coil builds between 0.2 and 0.5 ohms. The right figure depends on your mod and your cells rather than a universal target. Always check the resistance on a regulated mod before firing. Never build below the safe continuous discharge rating of your batteries.
Will any RDA fit my mod?
Every RDA here uses a standard 510 threaded connection, which effectively all regulated box mods and mech tubes accept. The thing to check is diameter rather than thread. A 30mm RDA will screw onto a mod with a 25mm top plate perfectly well. It will simply overhang the edges, so measure your device if the look matters.
Why is my build giving me a dry hit?
Almost always the wicking. Cotton packed too tightly cannot draw liquid quickly enough to keep up with the heat. Tails that are too long or too short will not reach the juice well properly. Re wick with a slightly thinner strip that slides through the coil with gentle resistance and saturate it fully before the first draw.
