Rolling paper sizes explained
Paper size is the first decision and it is the one most people get wrong when they start. Sizes are quoted by length and by width. The width matters as much as the length because it decides how much paper overlaps once the roll is closed. Too much overlap gives you a thick seam that burns unevenly.
Single wide
Around 70mm long and the original standard. Small, quick to roll and easy to carry, although the capacity is modest.
1 1/4 size
Roughly 78mm and the middle ground. Slightly longer and wider than single wide, which makes it the easiest size to learn on. Cones are widely available in this size too.
King size and king size slim
Around 110mm long. King size is the full width version. King size slim is the same length in a narrower sheet, which produces less overlap and a cleaner burn. It has become the default choice in the UK. If you buy one size, buy this one.
Paper materials and how they burn
Unbleached wood pulp. The everyday standard. Brown rather than white because it skips the bleaching stage. Reliable, easy to handle and slightly slower burning than the thinner alternatives.
Rice paper. Very thin and almost flavourless, which lets more of what you are smoking come through. The trade off is that thin paper is harder to grip and less forgiving of a clumsy roll.
Hemp. A slightly textured surface that grips well while you roll, with a neutral burn. A good compromise between the durability of wood pulp and the thinness of rice.
Ultra thin. Lighter again than a standard paper, leaving noticeably less ash. Designed for people who want the paper to contribute as little as possible.
Flavoured papers and wraps. A sweetened flavour is applied to the paper itself so the taste sits on the lips rather than in the smoke.
Cones, rolls and wraps
Pre-rolled cones
A cone is a paper already formed into a tapered tube with a card tip fitted. You fill from the wide end, pack it down and twist the top. They cost more per unit than a booklet of papers. In return you get a consistent shape, an even burn and no rolling skill required. Pack sizes run from six up to fifty. The bulk packs bring the unit cost right down.
Paper rolls
A roll is a continuous strip of paper on a spool inside a small tin, usually with a cutting edge built into the lid. Tear off exactly the length you want and no more. Rolls are the most flexible format in the category and typically the cheapest per centimetre of paper. A 15ft roll goes a very long way.
Hemp wraps and blunt wraps
Wraps are thicker and wider than papers, made from hemp rather than thin pulp. They burn more slowly and hold considerably more. Terpene infused versions carry an aroma in the wrap itself. They take more practice to roll neatly because the material is stiffer, so they are not the place to start.
Tips, filters and why they matter
The card tip at the mouth end does three jobs. It keeps the opening from collapsing so the draw stays even, it stops loose material being pulled through into your mouth and it gives the roll enough structure to hold comfortably. Skipping it is the most common reason a roll draws badly or runs hot at the end.
Tips come in two forms. Perforated booklets are a strip of card with a scored end, so you roll your own to the width you want. Pre-rolled tips arrive ready formed and just drop into place. Wide tips open the draw up. Narrow tips tighten it. Cones almost always arrive with a tip already fitted, which is part of what you are paying for.
Choosing between papers and cones

Storing your papers
Paper responds to humidity. In a damp environment it absorbs moisture, goes limp and tears while you roll. In a very dry one the gum line can dry out and stop sticking properly. The fix is dull but effective. Keep booklets closed, keep rolls in their tin and store both somewhere at normal room temperature out of direct sun. Keep cones in the tube they were supplied in so they do not get crushed flat in a bag.
