Conduction, convection and how the heat gets in
There are two ways to heat dry material. Conduction puts it in direct contact with a hot surface, usually a metal oven wall, so heat travels inwards from the outside of the load. It gets going quickly and it is simple to build small, which is why most pocket vaporisers use it. The trade off is that material touching the wall cooks harder than material in the middle.
Convection passes hot air through the load instead, heating it from all sides at once. PAX devices are built around an oven chamber, so grind consistency and packing have a real effect on the result.
Temperature and what it changes
Temperature is the main control you have. Lower settings produce a thin, cool vapour with the clearest flavour, because the more delicate aromatic compounds come off first. Higher settings produce a thicker, warmer and denser vapour with a heavier taste, as the material gives up more of what is in it before the session ends.
The practical approach is to start low and step up as the session goes on. That way you get the flavour early and the density later from the same load. Pack the oven firmly enough that the load holds together without gaps, yet loosely enough to draw through easily.

What temperature should I use?
