Vape kits and mods are the rechargeable devices that sit at the centre of every vaping setup. A kit pairs a battery with a tank or a pod so you can start vaping straight out of the box. A mod is the powered body on its own, chosen by vapers who already know which tank they want to run with it. Since single use vapes were withdrawn from sale across the UK on 1 June 2025, a rechargeable kit has become the standard route for anyone switching from cigarettes or moving on from a bar style device. Every product listed here is rechargeable and refillable, notified to the MHRA where the regulations require it and sold to over 18s only.

Types of vape kit explained

Pod kits

Pod kits are the most popular category in UK vaping and for good reason. The pod holds the e-liquid and either contains the coil or accepts a replaceable one, then clips into the battery magnetically or by friction. There are no threads to cross and usually no buttons to press. Refillable pod kits give you the run of every 10ml nic salt and shortfill on the market, which is where the long term savings come from.

Pre-filled pod kits

A pre-filled pod kit arrives with the e-liquid already sealed inside the pod. You vape it, then swap the pod rather than refilling it. This is the closest thing to the old bar style experience that remains legal, because the battery recharges and the pod is a replaceable part. Convenience is the trade off against cost per millilitre, so many vapers start here then move to a refillable device once they have settled on a flavour.

Mouth to lung starter kits and vape pens

Mouth to lung, usually shortened to MTL, describes a tight restricted draw where you pull vapour into your mouth first and then inhale. It is the closest sensation to smoking a cigarette, which is why MTL pens and starter kits remain the default recommendation for adult smokers making the switch. These devices run at low wattage, sip e-liquid slowly and use coils above 1.0 ohm.

All in one kits

An all in one device, also called an AIO, integrates the tank into the body of the device rather than screwing it on top. The result is a sealed, pocketable unit with fewer parts to lose and no exposed glass to crack. Many modern AIO kits now include adjustable airflow and variable wattage, so they suit intermediate vapers as well as newcomers.

Sub ohm and direct to lung kits

Sub ohm kits use coils with a resistance below 1.0 ohm, open airflow and higher wattage to produce dense vapour on a direct to lung draw. They are built for flavour intensity and cloud production rather than discretion. Because they vaporise e-liquid quickly, they pair with high VG shortfills at low nicotine strengths and they will get through a bottle far faster than an MTL device.

Box mods and mechanical mods

A regulated box mod houses a chipset that lets you dial in exact wattage, temperature control curves and safety cut offs, then takes whichever 510 tank you fit to it. Removable 18650 or 21700 cells mean you can carry a charged spare instead of waiting on a USB port. Mechanical mods have no chipset at all and pass battery voltage straight to the coil, so they are strictly for experienced builders who understand Ohm's law and battery safety.

Which vape kit should you buy?

If you have just put cigarettes down, start with an MTL pod kit or a pre-filled pod kit. The draw will feel familiar, the nicotine delivery is quick and there is nothing to learn beyond charging it and filling it. If you have been vaping for a few months and want more flavour or a longer battery, step up to a refillable pod kit with adjustable airflow or a compact AIO. If you already know your way around coils and you want maximum vapour, a sub ohm kit or a regulated box mod paired with a dedicated tank is the natural destination.

Budget is worth thinking about in two parts. The device is a one off outlay. Coils, pods and e-liquid are the recurring cost and they will dwarf the price of the kit within a couple of months, so a cheap device that takes expensive or hard to find coils is a false economy.

What to look for in a vape kit

Battery capacity. Measured in mAh. Anything from 1000mAh upwards should comfortably last a day of MTL vaping. Sub ohm devices need 2000mAh or more, ideally with removable cells.

Charging. USB-C has effectively replaced micro USB. Faster charging matters more than it sounds when your device is flat halfway through the day.

Coil availability and price. Check that replacement coils for the device are widely stocked before you commit. A discontinued coil family will strand an otherwise good kit.

Airflow control. An adjustable airflow ring lets you tune the draw from tight MTL to open DTL, which effectively gives you two devices in one.

Wattage range. Fixed output keeps things simple. Variable wattage lets you fine tune flavour and coil life once you know what you are doing.

Build and materials. Zinc alloy and aluminium chassis survive pocket life better than plastic. Leak resistant pod designs also save a lot of frustration.

Matching e-liquid to your kit

The coil resistance dictates the e-liquid, not the other way round. Coils rated above 1.0 ohm are MTL coils. They want a balanced 50/50 PG to VG liquid, which in the UK means a 10ml bottle of nic salt or traditional freebase e-liquid at up to 20mg per ml. Coils rated below 1.0 ohm are sub ohm coils. They need a thicker high VG shortfill, commonly 70/30, at a low nicotine strength of 0mg to 6mg.

UK regulations set the boundaries here. Nicotine containing e-liquid is capped at 20mg per ml, bottles containing nicotine are limited to 10ml and tanks sold with nicotine e-liquid are limited to 2ml. Shortfills work around the bottle limit by being sold nicotine free with headroom left for you to add a nicotine shot yourself.

Coils, pods and running costs

Plan on replacing a coil every one to two weeks. Sweet dessert and candy flavours contain sucralose that caramelises onto the coil and will halve that lifespan, while lighter fruit and menthol blends are much kinder. Priming matters more than most people realise. Saturate the cotton through the ports, fill the tank, then leave it standing for five minutes before the first draw. Skipping that step is the single most common cause of a burnt coil on day one.

Buying vape kits in the UK

Vaping products may only be sold to adults aged 18 and over. Nicotine containing products sold in the UK must be notified to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency before they go on sale. They must also meet the tank, bottle and strength limits set out in the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations. Single use vapes have been prohibited from sale since 1 June 2025.
