A removable cell is the reason a box mod stays useful for years. When the battery starts to fade you replace the cell rather than the device. You can also carry a charged spare instead of stopping to plug in. The trade off is that you take on responsibility for choosing the right cell and for looking after it, so the sections below deal with fitment first and safety second.
Which cell does your mod take?
The number is the size in millimetres. An 18650 is 18mm across and 65mm long, a 20700 is 20mm by 70mm and a 21700 is 21mm by 70mm. They are not interchangeable. A mod built for 18650 will not close on a 21700, while many 21700 mods ship with an adapter sleeve so they can also run an 18650. Check the manual or the battery door before ordering, because the difference between the three is only a couple of millimetres to the eye.
If your mod takes two cells, buy two identical ones at the same time from the same batch, charge them together and always use them as a pair. Mixing brands, capacities or ages in a dual battery mod puts one cell under more strain than the other. That is one of the most common causes of battery problems in vaping.
Capacity against current
Two numbers matter on any cell. The mAh figure is capacity, which is how long it will run between charges. The A figure is the continuous discharge rating, which is how much current the cell can safely deliver. The two work against each other, so a high capacity cell rarely has the highest current rating.
The Golisi G series sits at 20A and is aimed at runtime, which suits a regulated mod running a mouth to lung or mid wattage setup. The S series climbs to 35A and 40A and is intended for low resistance sub ohm builds that pull hard. Work out roughly what your build draws and stay well inside the rating of the cell rather than at the edge of it. Never run a mechanical mod on a cell whose continuous rating you have not checked.
Looking after your cells
Inspect the wrap every time you charge. A nicked or torn wrap exposes the metal can, which is a short circuit waiting to happen against a metal surface, so rewrap or retire any damaged cell. Carry spares in a plastic battery case, never loose in a pocket or a bag where coins and keys can bridge the terminals. Keep cells away from heat and out of a car in summer. Charge on a proper external charger where you can, since it balances better than a mod's onboard USB circuit and lets you see each cell separately.
Lithium cells lose capacity with every cycle. Replace one when it starts needing a top up by mid afternoon or when it runs noticeably hotter than its partner. Batteries should be recycled at a collection point rather than put in household waste.

Which battery size does my mod need?
Check the manual or the inside of the battery door. The digits describe the physical size, so an 18650 is 18mm by 65mm, a 20700 is 20mm by 70mm and a 21700 is 21mm by 70mm. What does the A rating on a battery mean?
It is the continuous discharge rating, the maximum current the cell can safely supply without overheating. A 20A cell suits regulated mods at moderate wattage. A 35A or 40A cell is meant for low resistance sub ohm builds that pull harder. Choose a cell with headroom above what your build draws rather than one at its limit.
Can I mix two different batteries in a dual mod?
No. Cells in a dual battery mod should be the same brand, the same model, the same capacity and the same age, bought together and always charged and used as a pair. Mismatched cells discharge unevenly, which loads one of them harder than the other. Marking each pair so they stay together is a habit worth forming early.
Is it better to charge in the mod or in a separate charger?
An external charger is the better option. It handles each cell individually, shows you the state of charge and generally treats the battery more gently than a mod's onboard circuit. Charging in the mod is fine occasionally and is unavoidable with built in batteries. If you use removable cells regularly, a dedicated charger is worth owning.
How do I know when a cell needs replacing?
Runtime is the clearest signal. A cell that used to last a full day and now fades by mid afternoon has lost capacity and should be retired. Also replace any cell that runs unusually hot, that has a dented casing or that has a torn wrap you cannot repair. Old cells go to a battery recycling point rather than in the bin.
How should I carry spare batteries?
In a rigid plastic battery case, one cell per slot, never loose. Coins, keys and foil can bridge the terminals of a bare cell and cause a dead short in seconds. Keep them out of direct sunlight and out of a hot car. Never carry a cell with a damaged wrap. Cases cost very little and remove the risk.
