Rebuilding is the point where a vaper takes over the job the coil manufacturer normally does. Instead of screwing in a stock head, you wrap your own coil from bare wire, set the resistance, wick it with cotton and fit it to an RDA or RTA. A few pounds of wire yields dozens of coils. It is not a beginner activity and it needs an ohm reader plus real respect for battery safety.
Flat ribbon wire against round wire
Round wire is the default. It is drawn to a circular cross section, wraps neatly and behaves predictably on almost any deck. Flat ribbon wire has a rectangular cross section, so for the same mass of metal it presents more surface area to the cotton. More surface against the wick generally means a faster ramp up and a fuller flavour at a given wattage, which is why ribbon keeps a following among flavour chasers.
Reading a wire listing
Three things decide what a spool will do for you. The material sets resistance per unit length and decides whether temperature control is possible. Kanthal A1 is the simple wattage workhorse. Nichrome ramps faster. Stainless steel grades such as 316L run in wattage mode or in temperature control. Gauge sets how much metal sits in each wrap and spool length tells you how many builds you get. Check each product page for the exact figures, because they vary from spool to spool.
Resistance, wraps and target builds
Resistance rises with more wraps and with thinner wire. It falls with fewer wraps, thicker wire and with dual coil arrangements. As a rough guide, a single coil direct to lung build in an RTA usually lands between 0.3 and 0.5 ohm at around 40 to 65 watts. A mouth to lung build sits far higher, commonly 0.8 to 1.2 ohm at 12 to 20 watts.
Building safely
Always check a finished build on an ohm reader or on a regulated mod's resistance display before firing. Look for shorted wraps touching the deck or the cap. Replace any cell with damaged insulation and stay well inside its continuous discharge rating. Mechanical mods carry no protection circuit, so they belong only to builders who can calculate current draw with confidence.
Wicking and coil life
Cotton does as much for flavour as the coil does. Take a strip slightly wider than the inner diameter of the coil, thread it through without dragging it and trim the tails so they just reach the juice ports. Too much cotton chokes the wick and produces dry hits. Too little floods the deck.
A well built coil lasts far longer than a stock head. Pulse it dry occasionally to clear residue, comb the wraps back into shape and re-wick once the flavour dulls. Sweet liquids loaded with sucralose caramelise onto the wire and shorten the interval between cleans.
