Conduction against convection
Conduction places the material in direct contact with a heated surface. It warms up quickly, costs less to build and is what most compact portables use. The trade off is uneven heating, so the load needs stirring partway through a session. Convection passes hot air through the material instead, giving more even heating plus cleaner flavour in exchange for a higher price.
Temperature, grind and cleaning
Temperature is the biggest single influence on the result. Lower settings give thinner vapour with more flavour. Higher settings give a denser output at the cost of a harsher draw plus shorter chamber life, so working upwards from low is the better habit. Grind matters just as much. Material ground too coarse leaves cold spots. Ground to dust it packs down and blocks the airpath. Aim for a medium, even grind that fills the chamber without being compressed.
