Coils & Pods
Coils and pods are the consumable heart of every vape device. The coil is the wire and wick assembly that turns e-liquid into vapour. A pod is the liquid reservoir that either houses a replaceable coil or has one built into it. Either way it is a wearing part with a finite life. Compatibility is the only question that really matters on a page like this. It is also the one most people get wrong. Coils are not interchangeable between brands and they are frequently not interchangeable between devices from the same brand. The sections below explain how to identify exactly what your kit takes, what the numbers printed on a coil mean and how to make each one last as long as it is capable of lasting.
Finding the right coil or pod for your device
Match the coil family, not just the brand
Manufacturers group their coils into named families and then reuse a family across several kits. Voopoo PnP coils fit any device built around the PnP platform. Vaporesso GTX coils span the GTX tank and a number of Luxe pod kits. Aspire, Innokin, Uwell, SMOK and OXVA all work the same way. The useful question is therefore not which brand your kit is, it is which coil family your kit takes. That name is normally printed on the coil itself and on the box the kit arrived in.
Check the exact model including the suffix
Model names carry suffixes for a reason. A Pro, a Max, an S or a change of number can mean an entirely different pod. If you own the newer revision of a kit, ordering the pod for the original version will leave you with something that either will not seat or will leak around the seal. Where a listing names two devices it fits both. Where it names one, assume it fits that one alone.
Empty pods against pre-filled pods
Refillable pods arrive empty for you to fill with any compatible e-liquid. Pre-filled pods arrive sealed with liquid already inside and are swapped rather than refilled. Pre-filled pod systems are what replaced single use vapes after the UK ban of 1 June 2025, because the battery recharges and the pod is a replaceable part. Both types are stocked here. Refilling costs less per millilitre. Pre-filled pods take less effort.
Resistance and wattage
Every coil is stamped with a resistance in ohms and a recommended wattage range. Those two numbers decide everything about how it behaves.
Coils above 1.0 ohm are mouth to lung coils. They run at roughly 8W to 20W, sip liquid slowly and give the tight restricted draw that feels closest to a cigarette. They want a thin 50/50 liquid such as a 10ml nic salt at up to 20mg per ml.
Coils below 1.0 ohm are sub ohm coils. They run from around 25W to well over 80W, produce a great deal more vapour and suit a direct to lung draw. They need a thick high VG shortfill at a low strength, usually 3mg. Feeding a sub ohm coil thin liquid causes leaking. Feeding a mouth to lung coil thick liquid causes dry hits.
Stay inside the printed range. Running below it gives weak, cool vapour with muted flavour. Running above it cooks the wick faster than liquid can replace it.
Mesh against round wire
Round wire coils use a traditional coiled strand of kanthal or stainless steel wrapped around cotton. They heat gradually from the centre outwards, cost less and last well in low power mouth to lung use.
Mesh coils use a perforated strip instead. The far greater surface area heats the wick evenly and almost instantly, which gives a noticeably fuller flavour and a quicker ramp up. That is why mesh now dominates modern pod and sub ohm coils. The trade off is that mesh draws more liquid, so it empties a tank quicker and it shows sweetener build up sooner.
Priming a new coil
Almost every burnt coil is a priming failure on day one. A dry wick that gets fired scorches instantly and no amount of soaking afterwards will bring the taste back.
Drip e-liquid directly into each visible wick port until the cotton darkens. Fit the coil, fill the tank or pod, screw it together and leave it standing for at least five minutes so the cotton saturates fully. Take three or four gentle draws with the device switched off to pull liquid through. Start at the bottom of the wattage range and work upwards. Never chain vape a brand new coil.
Coil lifespan and what shortens it
One to two weeks is normal for most vapers. The variables are the liquid, the wattage and your own habits.
Sweetened liquids are the single biggest factor. Sucralose caramelises onto the wire and can halve the life of a coil. Dark desserts, candy and bakery profiles are the worst offenders. Menthol, light fruit and tobacco blends are far kinder. High VG liquid in a coil that was not designed for it wicks slowly and scorches. Running at the top of the wattage range shortens life. Letting the liquid level drop below the wick ports is the quickest way to ruin one outright.
The warning signs are consistent. Flavour turns muted, then acrid. Vapour output drops. The draw feels hotter or harsher than usual. Some devices start to spit or gurgle. Once it tastes burnt it is finished, so replace it rather than trying to rescue it.
Rebuildable coils and wire
Rebuildable atomisers let you build the coil yourself from bulk wire and cotton, then set whatever resistance you want. Kanthal A1 is the standard for wattage mode. Stainless steel works in either wattage or temperature control. Nickel and titanium are temperature control only. Building is strictly for vapers who own a reliable ohm meter and understand battery safety, because no chipset is protecting you from a short.
Buying coils and pods in the UK
Coils and empty pods contain no nicotine, so no strength or capacity restriction applies to them. Pre-filled pods are different. They are limited to 2ml of liquid at a maximum of 20mg per ml and must be notified to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency before they can be sold. Everything in this collection is sold to adults aged 18 and over only.

How do I know which coil fits my vape?

Can I clean and reuse a coil?
Not usefully. Rinsing removes some loose residue, yet the caramelised sucralose bonded to the wire stays put and cotton cannot be restored once it has scorched. A cleaned coil will taste flat at best. Rebuildable atomisers are the exception, because there you replace the cotton yourself and can dry burn and brush the wire before rewicking.
Are pre-filled pods still legal in the UK?
Yes. The ban that took effect on 1 June 2025 applies to single use vapes, not to pre-filled pods. A pre-filled pod system is legal because the device recharges and the pod is a replaceable part rather than the whole unit. Pre-filled pods containing nicotine are limited to 2ml at a maximum of 20mg per ml and must be notified to the MHRA before sale.
Why is my new pod leaking or spitting?
Usually the liquid is wrong for the coil. Thin 50/50 liquid in a sub ohm coil floods straight through the wick ports. Overfilling does the same by flooding the central chimney. A pod that has not been pushed fully home will seep around the seal. Cabin pressure changes on a flight and leaving a pod lying on its side both cause it as well. Check the seals for hair or debris before assuming the pod is faulty.
