Vaping is the act of inhaling aerosol (vapour) produced by an electronic device that heats a liquid called e-liquid or vape juice. Unlike smoking, vaping does NOT involve combustion (burning); the e-liquid is heated by an electronic coil to produce a vapour. Key components: battery, coil/atomiser (heating element), tank or pod (holds e-liquid; UK TPD 2ml max), mouthpiece, buttons or draw activation. E-liquid contains four main ingredients: Vegetable Glycerine (VG; produces vapour), Propylene Glycol (PG; carries flavour), nicotine (optional; UK TPD max 20mg/ml), flavourings. UK 2026 status: vaping is legal for adults 18+; NHS-recognised harm reduction tool; PHE 2018 estimated 95% less harmful than smoking; Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 maintains 18+ vape age (no generational ban for vapes). UK Vape Tax from 1 October 2026: £2.20 per 10ml e-liquid.

What vaping is
Vaping is the act of inhaling aerosol from an electronic device that heats e-liquid. Unlike smoking, vaping does NOT involve combustion. Key components of a vape device: battery (rechargeable); coil/atomiser (heating element typically 0.4-1.4 ohms); tank or pod (UK TPD 2ml max); mouthpiece; buttons or draw activation. E-liquid contains four main ingredients: Vegetable Glycerine (VG produces vapour); Propylene Glycol (PG carries flavour); nicotine (optional, UK TPD max 20mg/ml); flavourings (natural and artificial). UK 2026: vaping legal for adults 18+; NHS-recognised harm reduction tool.
How vaping works
Six-step process. Step one: battery powers the device when activated by button press or inhalation. Step two: electrical current flows to atomiser coil. Step three: coil heats to 200-300°C (well below cigarette combustion at 600-800°C). Step four: heat vaporises e-liquid soaked into wicking material. Step five: aerosol/vapour produced; user inhales through mouthpiece. Step six: vapour delivers nicotine and flavour to lungs and bloodstream. No combustion means: no tar; no carbon monoxide; far fewer chemicals than cigarette smoke. Vape aerosol primarily VG, PG, water vapour, nicotine, flavour molecules. Some thermal breakdown products possible (acrolein, formaldehyde) but at much lower levels than cigarette smoke.
