The short answer

Press and turn

Press down. Twist anticlockwise.

UK child-resistant caps need two simultaneous actions: firm downward press AND anticlockwise twist. Press first, then twist while still pressing.

Simultaneous actions needed

In one paragraph

UK e-liquid bottles use child-resistant caps under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016. The standard mechanism is press-and-turn. Three steps. Place the bottle on a flat surface with the cap facing up. Push the cap firmly downward with your palm or thumb. While pressing down, twist the cap anticlockwise (to the left). The cap will come off once the inner safety mechanism disengages. Some UK bottles use squeeze-and-turn instead: pinch the sides of the cap while turning. The mechanism prevents children from opening bottles by requiring two simultaneous actions; an adult can perform both, a child usually cannot. After opening, do not store the bottle without the cap on; spillage and contamination risks. Replace the cap firmly between uses. The cap clicks into place when correctly resealed. UK 10ml nic salt bottles use squeeze dropper design for dispensing into pods and tanks. UK 100ml shortfills use wider screw caps for adding nic shots. The same child-resistant standards apply to all UK e-liquid regardless of nicotine content (including 0mg) under TPD regulations. EN ISO 8317:2015 cap standard prevents 80%+ of children under 5 from opening test bottles.

How to open and use UK vape bottles

The press-and-turn cap is the UK standard. Here is how to use it correctly.

Step 1: identify the cap type

UK vape juice bottles use one of three child-resistant cap types. Press-and-turn: the most common UK type; press the cap down while turning anticlockwise. Squeeze-and-turn: pinch the sides of the cap while turning anticlockwise; less common but seen on some 10ml nic salt brands. Push-and-pull: less common; push the cap to one side while lifting. Identify by looking for arrows or icons on the cap; most UK bottles have small molded arrows showing the action required. Most UK 10ml nic salt bottles use press-and-turn; most 100ml shortfills also use press-and-turn or simple screw caps with tamper bands.

Step 2: press the cap straight down

Place the bottle on a flat surface like a kitchen counter or table. Press the cap firmly straight down with the palm of your dominant hand or with your thumb. The pressure should be straight down, not angled. The cap has an inner safety lip that needs to clear before the threads can turn; this requires firm downward pressure. Common mistake: pressing too lightly. The press needs to be firm enough to fully compress the safety lip; if you can feel the cap give slightly, you are pressing correctly. Do not be afraid to press hard; UK bottles are sturdy and won't damage from normal pressing.

Step 3: twist anticlockwise while pressing

While maintaining the downward press, twist the cap anticlockwise (to the left, lefty-loosey). The cap should turn freely once both actions are simultaneous. After 1-2 full turns the cap will come off. Common mistake: trying to twist without pressing first. The cap will not turn unless the safety lip is depressed. Press, hold the press, then twist. Common mistake: twisting clockwise. Caps unscrew anticlockwise (left); clockwise tightens. Verify direction; molded arrows on the cap usually show.

Step 4: dispense e-liquid (10ml dropper)

UK 10ml nic salt bottles are squeeze dropper design. Method. Hold the bottle inverted over your pod or tank fill port. Squeeze the bottle gently; e-liquid releases through the dropper tip in a controlled stream or drops. Release pressure to stop dispensing; the bottle is soft plastic designed for this. Common mistake: tipping the bottle without squeezing. The bottles are designed for squeeze dispensing; tipping alone produces erratic drops. Common mistake: squeezing too hard. Floods the pod and overflows; squeeze gently for steady flow.

Step 5: dispense e-liquid (100ml shortfill)

UK 100ml shortfills use wider screw caps. Method. Twist off the cap (also press-and-turn or simple twist with tamper band). Pour gently into your tank or use a separate filling nozzle/needle. 100ml shortfills typically have wider necks for adding 10ml nic shots which transform 0mg shortfill into 1-2mg/ml mixed strength. Replace cap firmly after pouring; tighten until you feel resistance.

Step 6: replace cap and store

Press the cap straight down on the bottle and twist clockwise until you feel resistance. The cap should click into place. Storage: keep e-liquid bottles upright at room temperature; out of direct sunlight; away from heat sources. UK e-liquid keeps for 12-24 months unopened, 6-12 months after opening. Out of children's reach: even with child-resistant caps, store bottles where children cannot reach. Nicotine ingestion is dangerous; a small child swallowing 10ml of 20mg/ml e-liquid would need urgent medical attention. UK National Poisons Information Service helpline: 111.

Practical UK plan to use vape juice bottles correctly. Step one: identify cap type by looking for molded arrows or icons. Most UK 10ml nic salt bottles are press-and-turn. Step two: place bottle on flat surface; do not try to open in mid-air. Step three: press cap firmly straight down with palm or thumb. Step four: while pressing, twist anticlockwise. Cap should release after 1-2 turns. Step five: hold bottle inverted over your pod fill port; squeeze gently for controlled drops. Step six: leave 1-2mm air gap when filling pods to allow for warming expansion. Step seven: replace cap firmly until you feel resistance; clockwise to close. Step eight: store upright at room temperature, out of children's reach. Step nine: empty rinsed bottles can be recycled with normal plastic recycling. Step ten: if cap is stuck, wipe threads with damp cloth to remove dried e-liquid; never use pliers or excessive force.

Practical advice

Four facts every UK vaper should know

Press AND turn together

Two simultaneous actions required. Single action will not open child-resistant caps. Press firmly first.

Anticlockwise to open

Lefty-loosey, righty-tighty. UK caps unscrew anticlockwise. Clockwise to close and seal.

Squeeze gently to dispense

UK 10ml bottles are squeeze dropper design. Tipping without squeezing produces erratic drops.

Store out of children's reach

Even with child-resistant caps. Nicotine ingestion dangerous; small child swallowing 10ml needs urgent medical attention.

Frequently asked

Vape bottle questions

How do I open a vape juice bottle?
Why won't my vape juice bottle open?
Five common reasons. Not pressing hard enough: the child-resistant cap requires firm downward pressure simultaneous with turning. Try pressing harder while turning anticlockwise. Wrong direction: caps turn anticlockwise (left, righty-tighty/lefty-loosey). Verify direction. Trying to twist before pressing: the press-and-turn cap must be compressed before turning works. Press first, then twist. Sticky residue: dried e-liquid around the threads can lock the cap. Wipe the cap and bottle neck with a damp cloth to clear, then try again. Damaged cap: rare but possible if dropped or compressed. Replace the bottle if damaged. The right technique. Place bottle on flat surface. Press cap firmly straight down with palm. While pressing, twist anticlockwise. Cap should release after 1-2 seconds. If still stuck, try a UK rubber jar opener pad for grip. Never use pliers or force; can break the cap or shatter the bottle.
How do I use a vape juice dropper bottle?
Most UK 10ml nic salt bottles use a dropper-style cap; 100ml shortfills use a wider screw-cap with a separate fill nozzle. The 10ml dropper. Open the child-resistant cap (press and turn anticlockwise). Squeeze the bottle gently to release drops; the bottle is soft plastic designed for squeeze dispensing. Aim into your pod or tank fill port; do not over-squeeze. Release pressure to draw e-liquid back up the dropper. Replace cap. The 100ml shortfill. Twist off the screw cap. Tip the bottle to pour gently or use a separate filling needle/nozzle. 100ml shortfills typically have a wide neck for adding nic shots. Tighten cap firmly to seal. Common mistakes. Squeezing too hard floods the pod; squeeze gently for steady drops. Tipping the bottle without squeezing causes erratic drops; UK bottles are designed for squeeze dispensing. Storing without cap leads to evaporation and contamination.
Why does UK vape juice have child-resistant caps?
The Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 (TPD-derived) require all UK e-liquid bottles containing nicotine to have child-resistant closures. The reasoning. Nicotine is highly toxic in concentrated form; ingestion of even 10ml of 20mg/ml nic salt e-liquid can be dangerous to a small child. Child-resistant caps under EN ISO 8317:2015 standard prevent children under 5 from opening bottles in 80%+ of test cases while remaining accessible to adults. Tamper-evident bands: most UK bottles have a thin plastic band that breaks on first opening, indicating the bottle has been used. Three child-resistant cap types in UK use. Press-and-turn: the most common; press cap down while turning anticlockwise. Squeeze-and-turn: pinch the sides while turning. Push-and-pull: less common; push cap to one side while lifting. The same standards apply to all UK e-liquid regardless of nicotine strength (including 0mg) under the regulations. The regulations also limit bottle size to 10ml maximum for nicotine-containing e-liquid.
How do I avoid spilling e-liquid?
Six practical tips. Open the bottle over a sink or paper towel. Spills happen; planning for them limits damage. Squeeze the bottle gently when filling pods or tanks. Aggressive squeezing floods the pod and overflows. Aim the dropper tip into the fill port without forcing. The dropper should sit just above the fill port so drops can land cleanly. Leave 1-2mm of air gap when filling pods. Filling to the absolute brim causes leaks when the pod warms during use. Tighten caps fully between uses. Loose caps leak in pockets and bags. Store bottles upright at room temperature; horizontal storage increases leak risk through the dropper tip. UK bottles are designed for squeeze dispensing not pouring; tipping the bottle without squeezing produces erratic drops. If you spill: wipe up immediately with kitchen towel; nicotine residue is sticky and stains fabrics. Wash hands with soap; nicotine absorbs through skin and high concentrations cause nausea. Never put e-liquid in your mouth even briefly; nicotine taste is unpleasant and quantities matter.
What size are UK vape juice bottles?
UK e-liquid bottles are limited to 10ml maximum for any nicotine-containing product under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016. Standard UK formats. 10ml nic salt bottles: the most common UK format; squeeze dropper design; 1-20mg/ml nicotine. 10ml freebase bottles: similar squeeze dropper; 3-18mg/ml nicotine. 100ml shortfill bottles: 0mg only (no nicotine); wide screw-cap; intended for adding 10ml nic shots to make 110ml of finished e-liquid at 1-2mg/ml. 10ml nic shots: small bottles of 18-20mg/ml nicotine; designed to be added to shortfills. The 10ml limit is per bottle for nicotine; 0mg shortfills can be larger. Some hobbyist vapers buy 100ml shortfills with separate nic shots to mix at home; this works around the 10ml nicotine limit while staying legal. UK Vape Tax (October 2026 onwards) applies to all e-liquid regardless of bottle size at £2.20 per 10ml or proportional. Empty rinsed bottles can be recycled in normal plastic recycling.
Can I refill UK vape juice bottles?
Technically yes for personal use but not recommended. UK 10ml nic salt bottles are designed as single-use containers; the squeeze dropper bottles can be refilled but cleaning thoroughly between uses is difficult. Cross-contamination between flavours is common. Some hobbyist vapers buy UK 10ml empty bottles separately for DIY mixing; legal under UK regulations as long as final mixed e-liquid is for personal use only. Selling or supplying mixed e-liquid to other people requires registering with the MHRA under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016. UK 100ml shortfills work differently; they are designed to be topped up with nic shots so the bottle is intentionally larger than 100ml (often 120ml) to leave headspace for the nic shots. After mixing, the resulting e-liquid is legally compliant if total nicotine concentration stays at or below 20mg/ml across the bottle. For most UK vapers buying ready-made bottles is simpler than DIY mixing; the savings of mixing are smaller than they used to be due to the 2026 Vape Tax applying to all e-liquid.
