How to Inhale a Vape

How to inhale a vape
A clear UK 2026 technique guide for new vapers. Short answer: slow MTL draws for pod kits, faster DTL for sub-ohm. 3-5 seconds, not cigarette-sharp.
The short answer
MTL for ex-smokers3-5 second draw. Slow, not sharp.
MTL: slow draw to mouth, hold 1-2s, inhale to lungs, exhale. DTL: fast draw straight to lungs. Match technique to device.
3-5s
MTL puff length
2-4s
DTL puff length
Two main techniques. Mouth-to-lung (MTL) is the most common and most similar to smoking a cigarette. Take a slow 3-4 second draw into your mouth like sucking through a straw. Hold the vapour in your mouth for 1-2 seconds. Open your mouth slightly and inhale into your lungs. Exhale slowly. Direct-to-lung (DTL) is for sub-ohm devices and cloud chasers. Take a faster, more open-mouthed draw straight into your lungs without holding in your mouth. Exhale immediately. MTL works with most UK pod kits (Vaporesso XROS, OXVA Xlim, Uwell Caliburn) and uses 10-20mg/ml nic salts. DTL works with sub-ohm box mods and uses 3-6mg/ml freebase. Choose MTL if you are a former smoker; the technique mimics cigarette inhalation and most pod kits are designed for it. The most important rule: take slow puffs, not quick sharp drags. A vape puff should last 3-5 seconds, not 1-2 like a cigarette. Coughing in new vapers usually means inhaling too quickly, wrong technique for the device, or nicotine strength mismatch; most coughing resolves within 1-2 weeks as lungs adjust.
UK vape inhale technique in figures
Three figures every UK vaper should know.
3-5s
MTL puff duration
Slow draw for pod kits and ex-smokers. Cigarette puffs are 1-2 seconds; vape puffs need to be longer.
1-2s
MTL mouth hold
Hold vapour in mouth before inhaling to lungs. The MTL hallmark; mimics cigarette draw.
85%
UK pod kits are MTL
Vast majority of UK vape sales are MTL pod kits designed for ex-smokers. Sub-ohm DTL is hobbyist niche.
How to inhale a vape correctly
Match technique to device. Here is the full breakdown for both styles.
Mouth-to-lung (MTL): the cigarette-like technique
The most common UK technique and the most similar to smoking a cigarette. The four-step method. Step 1: place lips loosely around the mouthpiece and take a slow 3-4 second draw, pulling vapour into your mouth like sucking through a thick straw. Step 2: hold the vapour in your mouth for 1-2 seconds; this is the key MTL feature that distinguishes it from DTL. Step 3: open your mouth slightly and inhale the vapour into your lungs by breathing in normally; do not need to hold in lungs. Step 4: exhale slowly through nose or mouth. MTL uses tighter airflow, lower wattage (10-25W) and lower vapour production. Suitable for: pod kits (Vaporesso XROS, OXVA Xlim, Uwell Caliburn); MTL tanks; pre-filled pod kits (Elfa Pro, Vuse ePod); rechargeable big puff vapes; UK 10-20mg/ml nic salts.
Direct-to-lung (DTL): the cloud-chaser technique
The high-vapour technique for sub-ohm devices. Method. Place lips loosely around the mouthpiece (or open mouth slightly above it for restricted-DTL). Take a fast, deep draw straight into your lungs without holding in your mouth; like a deep yawn. Exhale immediately producing large vapour clouds. DTL uses open airflow, higher wattage (40-100+W), lower-resistance coils (under 1.0Ω) and lower-strength e-liquid (3-6mg/ml freebase). Suitable for: sub-ohm box mods (SMOK Mag, Voopoo Drag, GeekVape Aegis); sub-ohm tanks (TFV18, Zeus, FreeMax M Pro); 100ml shortfill freebase e-liquid. Not suitable for: high-strength nic salts (causes nicotine overdose risk); pod kits; UK pre-filled pod kits. DTL is preferred by hobbyist vapers and cloud chasers; not recommended for new UK vapers or ex-smokers.
Restricted DTL (RDTL): the in-between
A middle ground between MTL and DTL. Method: similar to DTL but with slightly tighter airflow and slower draw; vapour goes straight to lungs (no mouth hold) but the draw is more controlled. Used with: pod kits with adjustable airflow (OXVA Xlim Pro, Vaporesso XROS Pro) on more open settings; restricted DTL tanks. UK e-liquid: 6-12mg/ml or 10mg nic salts. Suitable for: vapers who find pure MTL too tight but DTL too loose; experienced ex-smokers transitioning to lower nicotine over time. Not the most common UK technique but a useful option for adjustable airflow pod kits.
Why slow puffs matter
The biggest mistake new UK vapers make is treating a vape puff like a cigarette drag. Cigarettes have continuous combustion so 1-2 second sharp drags work. Vape coils need time to heat the e-liquid and produce vapour; quick drags result in. Dry hits: insufficient vapour production, harsh and unpleasant. Reduced flavour: less e-liquid vaporised. Reduced nicotine delivery: leading to chain vaping to compensate. Coughing: a common cause for new vapers. The right approach: count to 3-5 in your head while drawing slowly. UK pod kit research suggests average MTL puff is 3.7 seconds; experienced vapers slightly longer. Inexperienced vapers tend to puff too fast which produces less satisfying nicotine delivery and more coughing.
Why am I coughing when vaping?
Six common causes. Inhaling too quickly: slow down, count to 3-5. Wrong technique for the device: trying DTL on an MTL pod kit, or vice versa. Nicotine strength too high: 20mg/ml in a sub-ohm DTL device causes harsh throat hit; reduce to 3-6mg or switch to MTL pod kit. Nicotine strength too low: 3mg in a tight MTL pod kit; not enough throat hit, vaper compensates by inhaling too hard. Increase to 10-20mg/ml nic salts. Burnt or damaged coil: dry hits from flooded or burnt coils; replace coil. Dehydration: PG/VG dries the throat; drink water before and after vaping. Most coughing in new vapers resolves within 1-2 weeks as lungs adjust. If coughing persists beyond 2 weeks, try lower nicotine strength, MTL technique, slower inhalation. NHS Smokefree services offer support for new ex-smokers.
Holding vapour in lungs
You do not need to hold vape vapour in your lungs. Vapour is technically not smoke (no combustion); it is aerosolised liquid droplets. Nicotine absorption happens through mouth, throat and lung lining quickly; holding the vapour does not increase absorption meaningfully. Many UK ex-smokers carry over the cigarette habit of holding smoke; this is unnecessary with vapes and can cause lightheadedness or coughing. Better practice. MTL: hold in mouth 1-2 seconds (this is the MTL hallmark), inhale to lungs, exhale within 2-3 seconds. DTL: inhale to lungs and exhale immediately. Holding vapour in lungs longer than 3 seconds offers no nicotine benefit and may increase irritation.

Four facts every new UK vaper should know
Slow puffs not sharp drags
3-5 seconds for MTL, 2-4 for DTL. Cigarette-style 1-2s drags cause dry hits and coughing.
MTL for ex-smokers
Closest to cigarette inhalation. Pod kits + 20mg/ml nic salts is the recommended UK setup.
Match technique to device
Pod kits are MTL only; sub-ohm devices are DTL only. Mismatching causes coughing or dry hits.
Do not hold in lungs
Nicotine absorbs through mouth, throat and lungs quickly. Holding longer than 3s offers no benefit.
