How vaping triggers and worsens acne
The link between vaping and acne is well-established through several biological pathways. Here is the breakdown.
Vasoconstriction (the main mechanism)
Nicotine causes vasoconstriction, narrowing blood vessels throughout the body including those supplying the skin. Reduced blood flow means less oxygen and fewer nutrients reach skin cells. The result: slower healing of existing spots, increased risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, dullness and visibly poorer skin quality. Vasoconstriction also contributes to early skin aging by reducing collagen production over time. The effect kicks in within hours of nicotine exposure and reverses within hours of stopping.
Hormonal disruption
Vaping elevates cortisol (the stress hormone) and may disrupt androgen levels. Both effects stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, the oil that lubricates skin and hair. Excess sebum is a primary trigger for acne because it clogs pores and creates an environment where bacteria (Cutibacterium acnes) thrive. Hormonal acne typically appears along the jawline, on the chin and lower cheeks.
