Can You Vape With Retainers In
Can you vape with retainers in?
A clear UK 2026 answer for retainer wearers. Short answer: technically yes but orthodontists strongly advise against. Take it out first, rinse, then put it back.
The short answer
Take it out firstTechnically yes but orthodontists say take it out.
Vapour heat warps clear plastic. Pigments stain it yellow. Residue traps bacteria. Remove retainer before vaping every time.

Take it out first
Technically yes you can vape with retainers in, but orthodontists strongly advise against it. The clear plastic used in Invisalign aligners, Essix retainers and similar removable trays is heat-sensitive and can warp from sustained vapour exposure. The pigments and sweeteners in e-liquid stain the plastic yellow or brown, often irreversibly. Vapour residue creates a sticky surface that traps bacteria, leading to bad breath and gum infections. Vaping causes dry mouth (from propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine in e-liquid) which reduces saliva and accelerates bacterial growth on the retainer surface. Hawley retainers (with thicker plastic plates and metal wires) are more heat-resistant than Invisalign or Essix but still benefit from removal. Fixed bonded retainers (a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth) do not warp but the surrounding teeth and gums are still vulnerable to vape-related plaque buildup. The simple solution is to remove the retainer before vaping, rinse your mouth with water for 30 seconds, brush the retainer lightly with a non-abrasive cleaner before reinserting. The whole process takes 2 minutes. Plan vape breaks rather than vaping with the retainer in. Or switch to nicotine pouches for the retainer-wearing period to avoid all the issues entirely. Avoid dark e-juices (cola, blackcurrant, coffee) which stain fastest. Skip alcohol-based mouthwashes for retainer rinsing because they dry out the plastic.
Retainers and vaping in figures
Three figures every retainer wearer should know.
70-90°C
Plastic softening point
Invisalign and Essix thermoplastic softens around this range. Sustained vapour exposure can warp trays subtly over time.
2min
To remove and clean
The full remove-rinse-brush-reinsert cycle is fast. Plan vape breaks instead of vaping with the retainer in.
15min
Cleaning tablet soak
Weekly deep clean. Drop a tablet (Retainer Brite, Polident) into water, soak for 15 minutes, rinse and reinsert.
Why retainers and vaping do not mix
Retainers protect a significant orthodontic investment and need careful handling. Vapour interacts badly with the materials they are made from. Here is what happens.
Heat and plastic warping
Modern clear retainers (Invisalign aligners and Essix retainers) are made from clear thermoplastic that softens at temperatures around 70-90 degrees Celsius. Vapour exits the coil in a vape device at considerably higher temperatures and cools as it travels through the airway and around the mouth. Sustained vapour contact, especially with sub-ohm devices producing larger denser clouds, can deform the trays subtly over time. The deformation can be small but enough to affect fit, which compromises the orthodontic effect. Hawley retainers (older style with thicker plastic plate and metal wires) are more heat-resistant but still benefit from removal.
Staining
Pigments and sweeteners in e-liquid leave residue on clear plastic. Dark and strongly coloured flavours (cola, blackcurrant, coffee, dark grape, mint with food colouring) stain fastest. The plastic turns yellow or brown over weeks of use. The discolouration is often irreversible because the colour penetrates the plastic surface rather than just sitting on top. A discoloured retainer is no longer cosmetically invisible (defeating the point of Invisalign) and can also affect hygiene because stained plastic is harder to clean.
Residue and bacterial growth
Vapour leaves a thin sticky residue from the propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, sweeteners and flavourings in e-liquid. The residue collects on retainer surfaces and creates a film that traps bacteria. Combined with the dry mouth caused by PG and VG (which are hygroscopic and absorb moisture), the retainer becomes an ideal bacterial habitat. The result is bad breath, increased risk of gum disease and infections in the soft tissue around the teeth.
Dry mouth amplification
Vaping causes dry mouth. Saliva normally washes bacteria off teeth and retainers. With reduced saliva, bacteria accumulate faster. The retainer holds the bacteria against the tooth surfaces for extended periods (especially overnight retainer wear). The combination of dry mouth, retainer residue and held-in-place bacteria significantly increases plaque, cavity and gum disease risk.
Fixed bonded retainers
Fixed retainers (a thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth) do not have the heat-sensitive plastic of Invisalign or Essix. They will not warp. The wire and bonding adhesive are not affected by vapour. However the area around the bonded wire is harder to clean and vape-related dry mouth plus residue buildup can lead to plaque accumulation between the wire and the tooth. Gum recession and bonding failure are real risks. The advice is the same: rinse with water after vaping, brush carefully around the bonded wire and have dental check-ups every 3 months.
The simple protective routine
Five steps every time you vape. 1. Remove the retainer before vaping. 2. Place it in your retainer case (not in tissue paper, where it can be thrown away by mistake). 3. Vape as normal. 4. Rinse your mouth with water for 30 seconds. 5. Brush the retainer lightly with a soft toothbrush and a non-abrasive cleaner (water plus mild soap, or dedicated retainer cleaner). Reinsert. The whole process takes 2 minutes. Avoid toothpaste because it is too abrasive and scratches the plastic. For weekly deep cleans use cleaning tablets such as Retainer Brite or Polident: drop a tablet into a glass of water, place the retainer in the solution for 15 minutes, rinse and reinsert. Tablets remove bacteria, stains and odours without abrasive damage.
Length of removal time
Make sure not to leave the retainer out for long periods unless your orthodontist advised you to. Retainers need to be worn consistently to prevent teeth moving back to their original positions (relapse). Short breaks of 5 to 15 minutes are fine. The cycle of remove-vape-rinse-reinsert fits within that window. Do not vape continuously for an hour with the retainer out unless your orthodontist has confirmed you can do that without losing alignment.

Four habits to protect your retainer
Always remove first
Take the retainer out before every vape session. Place it in its case (not tissue paper). Vape, rinse, brush, reinsert.
Skip dark e-juices
Cola, blackcurrant, coffee and dark grape stain plastic fastest. Stick to clear or light fruit flavours during the retainer phase.
Use cleaning tablets weekly
Retainer Brite or Polident in a glass of water for 15 minutes. Removes bacteria, stains and odours without abrasion.
Switch to pouches if full-time
For the first months when retainer wear is constant, nicotine pouches avoid the remove-and-reinsert cycle entirely.
What vaping does to different retainer types
A simple list comparing common retainer types.
Lower-risk retainer types
-
✓Fixed bonded retainers: wire and bond not affected by vapour.
-
✓Hawley retainers: thicker plastic plate is more heat-resistant.
-
✓Removable when not vaping: all types if you take them out first.
Most vulnerable retainer types
-
✗Invisalign aligners: thin clear thermoplastic, most prone to warping.
-
✗Essix retainers: similar thermoplastic, similar warping risk.
-
✗Any clear plastic retainer with dark e-juice: staining is rapid.
-
✗Worn during sub-ohm cloud sessions: highest heat exposure.
-
✗Worn overnight after vaping without rinsing: bacteria buildup.
