If you have looked at refillable pod kits, the Uwell Caliburn is a name that comes up again and again. The Uwell Caliburn is a compact refillable pod vape kit, first launched in 2019, that became the world's best selling open pod system thanks to its simplicity, excellent flavour and reliability. This guide explains what it is, how it works and why it has stayed so popular for years.

For a deeper look once you know the basics, our Uwell Caliburn review rates it in full. Our guide on the Caliburn range explained maps every model.

What exactly is the Caliburn?

The Uwell Caliburn is a refillable pod system, which is a small, rechargeable vape made up of two parts. There is the battery section, which is the main body of the device, plus a refillable pod that clips into the top and holds your e-liquid. Rather than buying a throwaway disposable, you simply refill the pod with the liquid of your choice and recharge the battery, then replace the pod every week or two once the built in coil wears out. It is designed for mouth to lung vaping, the tighter, cigarette like draw that suits people switching from smoking, while working beautifully with nicotine salts.

A quick history

Uwell is a respected Chinese manufacturer founded in 2015, which first made its name with the excellent Crown sub ohm tanks. The original Caliburn arrived in 2019 and changed the pod market almost overnight. It offered an easy, low maintenance vape with a draw activated firing system, meaning you just inhale with no buttons to press, paired with pods that had the coil built in for fuss free maintenance. It quickly became the most popular refillable pod system in the world, so successful that rival devices were routinely marketed as Caliburn killers, a label that says everything about its status.

Why is it so popular?

Several things combine to explain the Caliburn's lasting appeal, with flavour sitting right at the top. Uwell's Pro-FOCS flavour technology is designed to recycle airflow through the coil for a cleaner, more concentrated taste, with reviewers consistently rating Caliburn devices among the best flavoured pod kits you can buy. Add genuine simplicity, strong reliability, a sleek aluminium build and a sensible price, then you have a device that suits beginners and experienced vapers alike. It is the rare pod kit that does the fundamentals so well that people keep returning to it even after trying fancier alternatives.

To see the current lineup, the Uwell Caliburn collection brings every model and its pods together in one place, so you can compare options easily.

How does it work?

Using a Caliburn could hardly be simpler, which is a big part of its charm. You fill the pod with e-liquid, push it into the device, then let it sit for a few minutes so the coil soaks up the liquid. After that you simply inhale to vape, since most models are draw activated, though newer ones add an optional fire button. You recharge the battery by USB when it runs low, then swap in a fresh pod when the flavour starts to fade or taste burnt. There are no complicated menus or settings on the simpler models, which makes it genuinely beginner proof.

Who is it for?

The Caliburn suits a wide range of people, though it shines brightest for two groups. The first is smokers switching to vaping, who benefit from the tight MTL draw and smooth nic salt compatibility that together mimic the feel of a cigarette. The second is anyone who wants a no nonsense everyday vape that just works, without tinkering or cloud chasing. More experienced vapers often keep one as a reliable pocket device too. If you want big sub ohm clouds you would look elsewhere, yet for flavourful, satisfying, low maintenance vaping, few devices match it.

The many models

One thing worth knowing early is that Caliburn is a whole family of devices rather than a single product. Since the 2019 original, Uwell has released a long line of models including the G, G2, G3 and G3 Pro, the button free A series, the compact KOKO squares, plus feature rich options like the Caliburn X with its screen and adjustable airflow. Each generation refines the formula, improving battery life, adding USB-C charging, mesh coils and better leak protection. The breadth can feel overwhelming at first, which is why our guide on which Caliburn you should buy exists to help you choose.

The bottom line

The Uwell Caliburn is a compact, refillable pod kit that earned its place as the world's most popular open pod system by getting the basics right. It delivers excellent flavour through Pro-FOCS technology, a smooth MTL draw ideal for switchers, genuine ease of use and dependable reliability, all at a fair price. Whether you are leaving cigarettes behind or simply want a fuss free everyday vape, the Caliburn remains one of the safest, most satisfying choices on the market years after its debut.
